Emergency Response Pantry Program

Since Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, the Bay Area Food Bank has distributed over 8.5 million pounds of food to hurricane victims on the Mississippi and Alabama coasts. In the process of distributing this food, we identified several obstacles for quick and effective distribution.

In order to overcome one of these obstacles and make distribution even more effective, using funds provided by Feeding America we developed the concept of an Emergency Response Pantry.  We are currently implementing this concept in Alabama and Mississippi, and seeking funds to build Emergency Response Pantries in Florida.

What is an Emergency Response Panty?

  • A church or nonprofit organization that is strategically located to conduct  day to day hunger relief and able to respond in times of disaster.

  • Is equipped with refrigerated storage and generator so that they can provide immediate support.

  • Agrees to assist other local hunger relief organizations where appropriate.

What is the Criteria for an ERP?

  • Maintain a well run hunger relief program.

  • Possess a well constructed facility likely to survive a hurricane.

  • Be willing to take an active role in disaster food relief.

  • Connect with the local EMA.

What will the Food Bank Supply?

  • Pre fabricated 8ft x 10ft walk in freezer complete with a 12 kw generator and transfer switch to automatically maintain freezer operations during power outages.

  • Food and cleaning supplies for on-site post disaster feeding and or food box distribution at no cost.

What will the site need?

  • 8ft  x 16ft – 4” concrete slab

  • Electrical circuit 50 amp –  single phase 240 volt (this should be a dedicated line)

  • Natural gas or bottled/propane gas

  • Any permits required by the local authority for installation.

How can you help the Food Bank?

  • Help identify organizations best suited to be an Emergency Response Pantry.

  • Support of the concept of Emergency Response Pantries in hunger relief and disaster relief efforts.

  • Participate in the grand openings and ribbon cuttings where possible.

For more information about Emergency Response Pantries, please contact Lannie Shearls, Community Outreach Coordinator.
