| Mississippi Summer Food
Service Program grand opening. |
Kids Cafe began in 1989 in Savannah, GA., after two
young brothers were discovered in the kitchen of their
housing project's community center. The older brother
had broken into the kitchen to feed himself and his
hungry younger brother. In response to this example of
childhood hunger in their local community, the Second
Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia started the first
Kids Cafe. In 1993, America's Second Harvest - The
Nation's Foodbank Network launched the national Kids
Cafe program. There are over 600 Kids Cafes operating in
the United States. |

Our child nutrition programs
currently consist of Kids Cafe afterschool programs, Summer
Food Service Programs (summer lunch and snack), and a
Backpacks for Kids program. We are looking into
expanding our child nutrition program to include educational
opportunities, as well as a Junior Master Gardening Program
and a Junior Chef Program. These programs are part of
our nutrition education initiative and we are currently
seeking funding and support for the implementation of these
and other programs. For information on any of our Child
Nutrition Programs, contact Darcy
Long.
