The mission of the Backpack Program is to meet the needs of chronically hungry children by providing them with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to take home on weekends and school vacations when other resources are not available.
The Bay Area Food Bank’s Backpack Program is located at schools that have a high incidence of children in need. Each Backpack site distributes a pack of food to each participating child on Friday afternoon.

What’s in a Backpack?
Backpacks are filled with enough food for six meals and two snacks. The typical backpack contains a variety of child-friendly, easy to prepare food usually including protein and fruit juices, and the cost is $3.50 for approximately 2 to 5 pounds of food.
Child Hunger Facts
Research indicates that even mild under-nutrition experienced by young children during critical periods of growth impacts the behavior of children and their overall cognitive development according to the Links Between Nutrition and Cognitive Development of Children, 1998 Tufts University School of Nutrition Science and Policy.
