For the past 15 years, we have
participated in the National
Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, and every year we are
amazed at the amount of food our community generously gives.
The NALC food drive is held by Local Letter Carriers Union #469 on
the second weekend in May of
each year. It is the largest food drive both nationally and locally.
The letter carriers leave bags in the mailboxes on
their routes, and then the customers put canned goods into the bags
and leave them out, either on or near their mailboxes on a
designated day. The letter carriers then pick up the bags of
food and deliver them to the food bank. A group of volunteers
wait at the food bank for these "special deliveries" and
the food is sorted and cleaned. This prepares the food for our
warehouse, where a portion of it is stored for disaster relief
efforts. The letter carriers food made up the first loads of
disaster relief during the devastating 2005 hurricane season.
Residents who live in the rural delivery
routes (will not receive a bag in their mailbox prior to food
drive) are still encouraged to participate, either by dropping
off donations to their local post office or directly to our
main warehouse in Theodore. To learn more about this
event or to volunteer please contact us at (251) 653-1617.
